Junior Choristers Hymn Club

TO: Junior Choristers' Parents
FROM: Bekah Caruso, 298-9516 or bkcaruso@fpcnashville.org
SUBJECT: HYMN CLUB

Each month the Junior Choristers will study a hymn. In addition, during October we'll review the Doxology and the Gloria Patri. Look for the hymn sheet your child brings home (usually) the first Wednesday of each month. Sit down with your child and let her/him ask you the questions on the sheet.

Singers who choose to join the HYMN CLUB will work toward earning a copy of The Presbyterian Hymnal to take home at the end of the choir year. These singers fall into two categories:

  • First-time members (2nd or 3rd graders) will memorize and sing for me the Doxology, the Gloria Patri and the first verse of six of the seven hymns studied,
not including "Go, My Children" (congregational benediction response).

  • Extra Effort members (3rd graders who earned a hymnal last year) will memorize and sing for me the first verse of six of the seven hymns studied plus our congregational benediction response September-November, "Go, My Children" (instead of the Doxology and the Gloria Patri). They will earn a gold-embossed seal to place on the bookplate inside the hymnal earned previously.

Each child who sings at least one hymn for me during the year will receive a certificate.

We will sing the hymn of the month during each rehearsal that month and, as possible, in a worship service about the same time. Tapes of the hymns will be available soon to help the children in learning the hymns.

When your child is ready to sing for me, (s)he should add her/his name to my sign-up sheet at rehearsal. I'll then call to set up a time, usually during suppertime or at the end of rehearsal, to hear her/him. Third graders doing this for the second time may choose to call me at 298-9516 and sing on my voice mail.

The hymns of the church are an important part of our heritage, connecting us to Christians through all the ages. Words and tunes our children learn at this age will encourage and comfort them in many life experiences they'll face in the years ahead.

Thanks for your support in this program, which is voluntary, sort of like extra credit questions or projects at school. Please call me with any questions!
