New Hope Mission Trip
On Sunday, April 27, the Junior Choristers, our 2nd-3rd grade choir, provided the music leadership for the 11:00 service at New Hope Presbyterian Church, located on Lewisburg Rd., south of Franklin. The children sang the introit, two anthems, and our benediction response, "Go, My Children." Their presence provided a choir where none exists.
Seventeen of the 25 choir members participated in this mission trip: Amanda Arrants, Caroline Ayers, Tate Elliott, Emma Farrington, Taylor Farrington, Emme Fitts, McKenzie Garey, Lindsey George, Will Gordon, Jori Graeff, Waggoner Greer, Claire Moody, Ruth Puryear, Nathan Springman, Emily Stone, Gwyneth Walker, and Meredith Whitman. They were joined by director Bekah Caruso, accompanist Jim Hannaford (subbing for regular accompanist Mary George), choir assistants Myfanwy Graeff and Dee Ann Stone, soprano Daphne Garey (mom to McKenzie), and a good number of parents and siblings. Thanks go to Frank Tacker, who drove the church bus, and to his wife Jane, who rode on the bus with the group.
Pastored by the Rev. Andy Carrick, New Hope is the oldest congregation in the presbytery, dating from 1806. Church membership stands at 29, with 14 and 12 attending the services the previous two weeks. The choir contingent nearly quadrupled the usual service attendance. FPC member Jim Cawood served previously as the lay pastor for New Hope and its sister church, Bethesda. Preceding him was Dr. Harry Hassell, during whose pastorate the Celebration Singers (4-6) visited in spring of 2004. Dr. Hassell is the husband of FPC member Carolyn Hassell.
We are grateful to the New Hope family for allowing our choristers a wonderful opportunity to share their talents through music and to witness that God is at work in congregations of vastly different sizes and surroundings. The children especially appreciated the spread of fruit, cheese cubes, and juice, provided before the service by New Hope members. The special attraction of the morning was the herd of goats in the field behind the church. On the way home, the Junior Choristers stopped for lunch at the food court at Cool Springs.
