The Reverend Dr. Samuel M. Cooper
Executive Pastor
Email: scooper@fpcnashville.org

Sam became Executive Pastor of the First Presbyterian Church in July of 2010. He has a wealth of experience in a wide variety of roles over 34 years of ordained ministry. Sam has served as a College Chaplain (Presbyterian College), Executive Presbyter and Stated Clerk (Presbytery of New Harmony), and Pastor (Clio and Carolina Presbyterian Churches; Bethel Presbyterian Church is Walterboro, SC: and the First Presbyterian Church of Moncks Corner, SC).

A native of South Carolina, Sam graduated from Erskine College (BA), Princeton Theological Seminary (D.Min.), and Columbia Theological Seminary (D.Min.). However, he maintains that his most influential teachers are those who follow Jesus as Lord and trust Him as Savior, day in and day out, year after year.

Sam has been active at all levels in the life of the church. He has been a commissioner to the General Assembly where he also served as a committee parliamentarian for several years. He has been on the executive committee of Synod’s council and has served on almost every committee at the presbytery level, moderating many of them. He has been a member of the Board of Trustees of the Rabun Gap Nacoochee School, Thornwell Home for Children, and the South Carolina Christian Action Council. In the community, he led a successful effort to recruit physicians to an underserved area and to organize a Habitat for Humanity affiliate.

Sam is married to Lily Patterson Cooper and is the father of three grown sons; Morgan, Pat, and Robin.
